James Solyst is a Principal Consultant in ENVIRON's Arlington, US, office with more than 25 years in product stewardship, global chemical management, emergency response and corporate responsibility.

James also has experience working on international initiatives including REACH and the UNEP's Strategic Approach to International Chemicals Management (SAICM) and harmonization of global product stewardship programs.

Selected project experience includes:

  • Assisted chemical manufacturers responding to legislative, regulatory, and market attempts to deselect and/or ban products and implementing product stewardship and sustainable performance initiatives to support market placement and maintenance of market share.
  • Assisted users of the EPA Integrated Risk Information System in evaluating information to be incorporated, advising them on how data are updated through the program process and how determinations affect market decisions. Assisted industry clients in working with the updating and establishment of new IRIS chemical files.
  • Advised US state governors on responsibilities and vulnerabilities regarding chemical facility terrorism and emergency management. Supported industrial clients on prevention, preparedness and response strategies. Authored books and articles on facility safety and regulatory and legislative steps to improve security, including the application of Inherently Safer Technology (IST).
  • Participated in international regulatory and risk management forums including OECD, WHO and International Programme on Chemical Safety workshops and World Summit on Sustainable Development making presentations on incorporating emerging science into different decision-making paradigms.
  • Represented US industry groups' international negotiations relating to Globally Harmonized Systems (GHS), pollutant release and transfer, chemical safety and other facility/product management issues.
  • Recognized expert in green chemistry and green engineering and invited to serve National Academies Board on Chemical Sciences and Technology Roundtable and the American Chemical Society panel on global challenges relating to green and sustainable chemistry.

Presentations before the United Nations, EPA Science Advisory Board, National Academy of Sciences, American Bar Association; lecturer at the Johns Hopkins University's Risk Science and Public Policy Institute.
